London, UK – YDL – 13.09.19 – The Young Diplomats in London (YDL) were delighted to have as a guest speaker, the Rt. Hon. Baroness Patricia Scotland QC, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth for a Breakfast Talk held Friday, 13th September 2019 at the Hyatt Churchill.
Secretary General Scotland spoke to the YDL on the importance of Relationship building as key to successful diplomacy, “the people you start with will be the peopole that you end with”. SG also shared her journey to her current post from humble beginnings in Dominica and East London but determination and parents who believed in excellence as they key to get her to where she is today. SG also provided the YDL members and guests with an overview of what the Commonwealth is and its importance on the global scale. SG spoke specifically on climate change as a pressing matter of our time, one which impacts us all and highlighted the recent destruction to the northern islands of The Bahamas by Hurricane Dorian. SG also shared details about the support provided by the Commonwealth to The Bahamas post Hurricane Dorian and spoke about her role in assisting the Rubicon Organisation to immediately make their way to The Bahamas to assist with recovery. The SG also spoke about the support provided to Dominica and the British Virgin Islands which are still recovering from Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017.
